What does the online store tell you about the quality of their jewelry?

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

Does the look of the online jewelry store tell you anything about the quality of the men’s rings they carry? Can you assume anything by the way they word their warranties? By the photographs of their products say their tungsten rings? By the borders, images, icons, logos or colors? Does quality have a corollary to price and if so is that the only corollary? I don’t know about you but I think it takes more than just pictures, words and logos to convince me that the product is worth the price.

Some things have helped me in my determination of this price versus value question regarding online purchasing:

  • If I get it and don’t like it - can I return it for a full refund and no questions asked?
  • Can I see similar products - even similar pictures or images - for significantly different prices?
  • Do I recognize a name or a brand and if so can I associate the brand with quality or not?
  • If I am searching for a ring for example, does it have real diamonds or CZ’s? Does it have real gold or gold plating?
  • What type of warranty comes with the product - is it written and is it prominently displayed on the site?
  • Do I know anyone else who has purchased from this online store - someone I trust to give me an honest recommendation?
  • How high up on Google or Yahoo or Bing do I find the site when I type in my key word? (type in ceramic rings for example - typically the ones at the top have earned it by their quality, their longevity and their good customer service)
  • For the most part, pricing will follow quality - really cheap prices typically suggest really cheap products - you remember the old adage that you can’t get something for nothing …

These might not be the only sources to look to when making an online determination but they at least narrow the chances of getting ripped off. I wish you luck, for those of us who have made mistakes online, it can be a painful experience - one that is not soon forgotten!

Are Tungsten Rings affordable?

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

I have looked everywhere for tungsten rings. On line and in the malls. I have looked at eBay and at swap meets, even at pawn shops. I have seen men’s rings from $9.99 to $999.99 and higher. I have come to some conclusions about the affordability of this new style. I have come to these conclusions based upon hours of comparisons to other ring types such as titanium, gold, silver and ceramic. You name it - I have searched them out, analyzed them from a cost perspective and again, made some conclusions that I am hopeful will be of some value to you …

Tungsten rings can be purchased online from eBay for between $25 and $50. These appear to be good quality rings although my guess is that most of them are made in China and other foreign countries. If they use real tungsten carbide and have not cut corners in the manufacturing process, then these would be great values. The problem is that no one really knows how they make them, what they are made of and why they can be bought so cheap.

Another strategy is to fine a seller who carries a patented or protected line of tungsten rings that have a solid written warranty and their styles are known to be carried in other retail sites all over the country. One such line that I have found is the Triton Collection out of New York. They are really fine mens tungsten rings and are a little pricier than the ones on eBay and other cheaper sites.

Bottom line: these styles and fashions are not only affordable they are gorgeous and last forever - so good luck with your search!

In the battle for the top position - can ceramic compete with tungsten rings?

Monday, August 3rd, 2009

OK - so here’s the question - can a ceramic ring compete against a tungsten ring in the mens rings category of fine jewelry? Let’s not start with what does it mean to compete. Let’s just compare price to price and fashion to fashion and design flair and against design flair. So here we go …

First price. These two styles are rather comparable in price when it comes to entry or basic ring styles. Admittedly, the higher end tungsten varieties such as is found in the Triton Collection can get rather pricey because of their manufacturing processes and the inlays they craft into their designs, but as mentioned we are going to compare basic to basic. You can buy either style for under a hundred bucks, and they are available in similar sizes, they both have styles available in comfort fit designs, and they are both classified as hot, new styles. So in my opinion it is a toss up in this comparative category.

Next is design flair and fashion. In my opinion, these two styles are both very unique in their design capacity although tungsten weighs more and has more of an ability to produce a unique look through inlaid materials such as diamonds, CZ’s, gold and platinum. Ceramic are more simple in nature but have an artsy look that can not be duplicated in the marketplace - beveled edges, unique carvings, black and ornate polished edges, etc. All in all I think tungsten edges ceramic when compared head-to-head but there is something about the lighter-weight designs that captivates this author!

In my research I found hundreds and hundreds of styles of tungsten rings whereas only dozens in the latter. Why? I think tungsten has been at the fore-front of this chase to the top and is probably winning!
