Is a men’s ring an appropriate gift?

When does buying a man a ring signify more than it is intended? I don’t mean a men’s engagement ring, just a men’s ring. If I wanted to buy one for my boyfriend, even though we are light-years away from even thinking about marriage - would it be appropriate?

If so is there one that is more accepted than another? I mean if it is gold is this less acceptable than a tungsten ring? I kind of think so. I mean a tungsten variety can be used as just a nice ring but gold - that seems to signify more than just a causal relationship - don’t you think?

I remember a good friend of mine starting down this path and felt the way I do now - in fact she was so distraught even thinking about it that she chose a different kind of gift - I think she ended up getting him a bathrobe and slippers … boring! But I’m not going to let that deter me. He is getting a ring - period. it won’t be one that could give him the wrong impression - not a “love” ring that means we are together forever - you know. It will be a friendship ring and if it blossoms into more than friendship then great …
